Coal (an acrostic poem)

Chucking the little black nuggets onto the embers of the fire and soon they burst into flame

Outputting more heat to warm up the chilly cabin

And to think people called him a dinosaur when he burnt his favorite fuel

Look, he was just freeing his spiritual ancestors’ souls in exchange for warmth

Cold permeated the air as it dripped through the walls.

His teeth chattered comically, so he put on a third sweatshirt.

It couldn’t get more miserable. could it?

Looking at the water pipes overhead, yes, it could.

Leaving his basement, he contemplated the empty fireplace.

Yeah, maybe he didn’t need the couch anymore.
