The information dragged on and on as far as the mind’s eye could see

Her imagination trying to scoop it up and deposit it into memory

Research she knew she would use later

Examining lines of thought and spinning them together

As she wrote down her ideas

Determined to weave her story

Chord (an acrostic poem)

Catching emotions in a secret stack of tones

Heartening those who heard, and pleased the Lord

One after another, the fourth, the fifth

Reaching a crescendo in a major lift

Determined to inspire all to sing out “Hallelujah”

An homage to “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen

Heatwave sent summer shimmers flowing down the black pavement

Yet those crashing waves offered no respite from the oppression

Determined to find relief, she struggled with the large retaining nut

Realizing it was too tight, she called out for help

And yet no one came to the rescue because a firetruck came around the corner

Now she was scared that she was going to be in big trouble for even considering such a thing

That was assuaged when they pulled out an even bigger wrench and viola the water flowed

Determined to let chance decide not only my fate but everyone’s

I rolled the five of them, hoping for the best, but needing a perfect result

Couldn’t look as they spun to a stop

Everyone gasped.  I peeked at the result before screaming triumphantly.  The dragon was dead!

Defeat (an acrostic poem)

Determined to go to bed sooner

Enabling a more refreshing start to the week

Fumbling through the stuff that had to be done

Everything taking so much more time to do

And some of it didn’t work out at all

Then the clock read 2 a.m. and he had to admit…

Dish (an acrostic poem)

Determined to consume her weight in pasta

It tasted so good.  The sauce was so savory

Slurping noodle after noodle splattered sauce everywhere

Her date watched with a hungry smile.  He thought she was such a tasty…

Wonder (an acrostic poem)

What she loved to do was count the stars in the night sky

Only she knew she could never get an accurate number

Not once did she let it stop her from what she perceived was her duty

Determined to be a witness to every star’s existence in its moment of time

Everything comes to an end, and one day she might be the only one to notice

Remembering the dot of light for what it might have been before it wasn’t there anymore

Legend (an acrostic poem)

Leaving it all behind was going to be hard

Everyone knew her name, her story

Giving up everything to save their nation and their world

Eventually losing her left eye and arm in the dragon’s fire

Now she quietly sits in the town square every day and enjoys what sun there is

Determined to let her legacy pass into myth and…

Thunder (an acrostic poem)

Image: assets.thespinoff.co.nz/1/2019/06/eight_col_lightning-thumb.jpg

The storm crashed through the valley

Heaving tree branches and debris to-and-fro

Until there seemed to a charged pause

Negative particles madly dash from sky to ground

Determined to find a place to rest

Except that outbreak from the heavens causes heated air to flee the scene

Resulting in colder air to rush in and clap at the drama of it all
