Once the ritual words were uttered
And the two men spat in their palms and shook hands
Then the pact was sealed as witnessed by those around
How such a silly contrivance made something binding made her head spin

So it was time to work, but he didn’t want to
How was he supposed to do this for the rest of his active life
If he waited until he could retire, he would be too old to do anything fun
F his boss and all the talk about work-life balance
The fact that he punched the timeclock and not his supervisor was a miracle
How high in the air was he right now?
Everything looked like it was so far away
It made him giggle with glee.
Gesturing he asked her, “Is this how you see everything?”
Her slap to his shoulder threw him off balance. “Why did you do that?”
That’s when she took her glasses off his face.
Giving his new teammate a fist bump seemed to be the perfect greeting
Relaxed yet said, “I feel you, my brother.”
Except the next person came up and started a whole ritual
Exchanging high fives, bows, spins, hops and ended with a modified Cossack Dance
That’s when it dawned on him that maybe he didn’t know how to …
“How much do I hate you? Let me count the ways.”
“As if you can complain. I’m the best thing for you.”
“Really? That’s about as offkey of a response as I can imagine.”
“Perhaps, but I am secure in my knowledge that I know how to pull your strings.”
Putting things together for the first time inside my head
Letting me complete the equation of why and how
Until now I was foolishly worried about each part individually
So now I can worry about the whole thing as I should have all along
