Attack (an acrostic poem)

An army to the east and another to the west

That made his position in the middle very problematic

The command had told him to flee and save as many of his troops as he could

And that was tempting, but this was the small town his wife had grown up in

Couldn’t leave her family and friends to become at most a footnote in history

Knowing it was futile, he gave the order to charge. Maybe it would give them enough time to escape.

Bounding the dunes without a care in the world

Under the glittering stars high above

Giving a middle finger to the rest of the jealous, stressful world

Going to do this forever and nothing was going to stop me

Yet that’s when the car’s computer crashed and left me stranded on the God-forsaken beach all alone

You remember those days when your body didn’t ache

Or you could eat two pizzas and not gain a pound

Until that dreaded middle age kicked in

That flipped your whole world, but you didn’t notice till it was too late

Here we are now, but there is a silver lining.  Okay, maybe not.

Canyons of concrete, glass, and steel define the urban landscape

Intense neon and fluorescent lights paint the scene in bright brash colors

That pulse with the heartbeat of the millions who live there

Yet she sat on the roof in the middle of it all, as alone as the moon that traveled overhead

She felt so cold and lethargic.  Today was just one of those days.

He handed her a whiskey, and she threw it back

Oh it burned on the way down, but it then warmed her middle nicely

That soon spread throughout her body and things weren’t as bad anymore.

Being so far apart just doesn’t feel right

Raging emotions flow like white water between us

It makes the divide seem so daunting

Discourse allows us to begin to build a way from both sides

Greeting each other on firmer neutral ground in the middle
