Prototype (an acrostic poem)

Putting together yet another try was one of the most satisfying things he did

Reaching down he snapped in the last fitting and took a breath, ready to see if it worked

Of course, building all these iterations was also one of the worst things he could do

They reminded him of the numerous failures he didn’t plan for, that he was a bad engineer

Only he knew there was almost zero chance that the first one would work out of the box

That was the stuff of myths, legends, and dumb luck

Yearning to know if this was the one, he flipped the on switch

Prepared for sparks to fly and flames to claim one more attempt

Except this time it didn’t burn.  It still didn’t work, but that was still progress?

Impossible (an acrostic poem)

It might look like things are at their darkest.

Makes picking up your burdens and trying again seems pointless.

Perhaps even preposterous.

Oh, don’t lose faith in yourself.

So many things are doable once you put your mind to it.

Strive to find little successes and chain them in a row.

It matters seeing those breadcrumbs of progress.

Believe that you can climb out of the dark depths.

Lift yourself one bit at a time.

Eventually you will feel the sun of triumph on your face.

Progress (an acrostic poem)

Proof that you are moving forward can be hard to find

Realize that sometimes just not going backwards as fast is something

Or stay still as everyone around you marches somewhere you don’t want to go

Grieve when you need to grieve, that allow you to move forward

Rest when you are tired.  That allows you to move forward

Every step might feel like you are wading through a riptide

So much of life can be like that

Still, one step, then another, always trying.  That is how it works.  Give yourself credit for…

Awkward (a 100 word story)

Love should make you feel good, but Francis wasn’t.  They didn’t know why.  It just was odd.  It was the first time they were attracted to another human being.  Cats were easy.  Humans not so much.

Francis walked up to Terry.  “Hello.”

Terry smiled at the ground.  “Howdy.”

Francis broke out in a cold sweat looking for somewhere to hide.  “Well, I’ve got to go.  Bye.”

Terry looked up for a brief second.  Boy, that smile was brilliant.  Then Terry looked back down.  “Me too.”

Francis fled down the hall, but their feet never touched the ground.

Francis smiled.  Progress!
