Review (an acrostic poem)

Reading books was always a chore for Melonie

Every page was a struggle for survival with respect to staying awake

Viewing the text made the words devolve into scribbles

It was enough to give her a migraine just thinking about it

Even the pages would cut the wafer-thin skin of her fingertips

When she finally was done, it was all worth it when she left a one-star …

Optics (an acrostic poem)

Over the years, she realized her vision was deteriorating

Putting reading into the group of activities that were getting hard to do

That was a huge penalty to getting older

It made her mad at the universe for allowing this to happen, but to no avail

Collapsing her into a deep depression that echoed her depleting eyesight.

So it surprised everyone around her when she would not put on her damn glasses

Replaced (an acrostic poem)

Reading through the want ads looking for something to do.

Everyone wanted experience, and I haven’t done the time.

Perhaps in the past I would have lied and tried my best.

Learning what I could before I was given my parole.

And applying that knowledge to the next economic sentence.

Can’t believe no matter where I go, there I would chains waiting.

Eventually the robots will come and take all of it away.

Destroying our way of life and setting us free, but to do what?

Wish (an acrostic poem)

What would I do if I found a genie in a bottle?

I would ask for three simple things.

Something that would make you smile, something to make you think, and something to give you peace.

Hope by you reading this some of it came true.

The Fortune Teller (a 200 word story)

Image: macaunews.mo/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Casino_Chips.jpg

The cards spoke of fate, but the future they predicted was always left up to interpretation of the one reading them.  Most people were almost illiterate.  Preston fancied himself better than that.

He pondered that conclusion as he stared at the cards before him.  He knew his present was a pair of jacks grinning at him, but his future?  The jacks might have been a good a few hands ago, but now he was down to just a two more big blinds.

“What will it be?” asked Jerry with that lopsided grin he always wore.  He sat behind a large chip stack that everyone at the table had been contributing to over the last hour or so.  Preston stared at his opponent trying to get a read, but Jerry was a stone wall.

Preston thought about folding, but there wasn’t a promise of a better hand in the wings.  This was the poker player’s dilemma.  What did the future hold?

The jacks were mute, but Preston decided that the future was bright.  He didn’t care if the light was that of victory or the burn out of defeat.  He adjusted his shades and matched Jerry’s goofy ass grin.

“All in.”

Library (an acrostic poem)

Legions of words were peppered among the many shelves

It left the heady scent of knowledge permeating the air

Bracing herself, she picked up the first tome she saw

Reading the contents left her hungry for more

And so she consumed another, and then another.  She kept going

Ravaging the stacks, never feeling sated

Yet the feast did not disappoint

Truth (an acrostic poem)

They were so worried about all the lies

Reading through forum after forum to authenticate facts

Until their eyes crossed with information overload

That was when they discovered a fact that superseded all others

How few people actually really cared

Change (an acrostic poem)

Can’t things just remain the same?

He shook his head reading the paper about another closure

As if being single wasn’t hard enough

Now where would he meet women?  He hated Tinder.

Going on Twitter just made his skin crawl

Even though this virus likely wouldn’t kill him, his love life was RIP.
