She flew through his mind causing his thoughts to race after her

Over and over she escaped his grasp, swooping just out of reach

All he could do was keep trying, but in the end, he gave up and watched

Realizing she was forever not obtainable, but forever in his thoughts, she would…

Chef (an acrostic poem)

Cooking the lights out every night was her goal in life

Harvesting awesome flavors from every ingredient she touched

Extreme foodies would travel from halfway around the world to sample her dishes

Focusing on that dream, the six-year-old watched her mom boil water

Plate (an acrostic poem)

Putting down the platter in front of her

Lisa pondered what was going to happen to her next

All that Googling and research, but in the end, it always came down to a coin flip

Tails and she would die from the poison there in front of her, okay, maybe that was a bit strong, but…

Everyone watched as she ate. She smiled. It seemed to be gluten-free. Heads it is!

One (an acrostic poem)

Only person who could fill her days with laughter was gone

Nothing was ever going to bring that twinkle back into her eye

Every sunset she watched and prayed that maybe he would rise in the morning

Relaxing against the wall, he watched his classmates convulse on the dance floor

Everything that night had been disastrous.  First, his date ditched him

And she decided to slow dance with the person who used to be his best friend

Drinking his punch, he wondered what could possibly happen next, but then he laughed

Yes, he knew what was going to happen next.  His master plan was working perfectly.

Posts (an acrostic poem)

Putting her words out there in the interwebs

Opened herself up to all sorts of criticism

She smiled as she watched her retweets and replies exploded

The more she yanked their chains, the more they gave her satisfaction

So she cracked her knuckles and began her next trolling

Break (an acrostic poem)

Baby porcelain doll, the last one her daughter had ever held, burst into sharp shards as it hit the floor

Releasing so many emotions in her, some she thought she had closed within that small casket

Everyone around her just stopped and stared, silent, not knowing what to do or say

As she watched those pieces scatter she started drowning in a psychological flood

Keeping the tears away was impossible as she felt something inside of her…

Structure (an acrostic poem)

Steel girders littered the broken skyline

That the wind howled through

Reaching for her shotgun, Lily watched for the Others

Until she was locked away in her hidey-hole

Couldn’t be too careful ever since the Others had landed

The war for Earth had been devastating to both sides until the Truce

Under that, no new Other could come planetside

Relying on those already here to finish the job without destroying what was left of the planet

Except now no one knew who was winning anymore

Dish (an acrostic poem)

Determined to consume her weight in pasta

It tasted so good.  The sauce was so savory

Slurping noodle after noodle splattered sauce everywhere

Her date watched with a hungry smile.  He thought she was such a tasty…

The Lesson (an 100 word story)

Under a gloomy gray sky, she looked at the shattered pieces of her life strewn at her bleeding feet.  She stood there dumbfounded.  Everything was gone in mere moments!  She cried and almost just gave up, but…

Time kept moving.

Tears dried.

The sun crept out from behind the clouds.

She grabbed a broom and began to clean up the mess that had been her life and threw it away.  She kept a couple of small pieces to remind herself of the before times.  She then made a cup of tea and looked at the horizon.

The phoenix watched and learned.
